Kitabi

Beyond the Bookshelf

Why Kitabi

A real bookshelf, finally digital

Reading apps track what you read. Cataloguing apps list what you own. Kitabi does both — and remembers which friend still has your favourite paperback. Scroll on: the whole library, chapter by chapter.

Chapter I · The Shelf

Every book you own, in seconds

Point your camera at the barcode and the book arrives — cover, author, publisher, pages, the lot. No barcode? Search the catalogue or add it by hand. Even books without a photo get a handsome cover of their own, so your library always looks loved, never empty.

  • ISBN scanning — one flash of the camera per book
  • Editions done right — your 1994 paperback, not a generic listing
  • Authors, publishers & series — tap any name to browse everything by them

Chapter II · The Ledger

Never lose a lent book againFREE, FOREVER

“Lent to Anu, 2 June.” Kitabi keeps a proper ledger — who has it, since when, returned ✓ — and gives you a gentle nudge when it’s time to ask for one back. Other apps paywall this; here it’s the whole point.

  • Lending records, not sticky notes — every loan, dated and remembered
  • A Borrowed shelf too — the books friends trusted you with, both sides of the ledger
  • Lend to a friend on Kitabi — the book appears on their Borrowed shelf, and a return ticks both ledgers at once
  • Due-date reminders — a quiet local notification, never a public shaming

Chapter III · The Journal

Your reading, remembered

Pending, reading, read, stopped, wishlist — with start and finish dates, page-by-page progress, and a reading timer for the sessions you want to savour. A reading journal that fills itself in.

  • Progress in pages or percent — pick up exactly where you left off
  • Timed reading sessions — press start, sink in; your hours appear on Home
  • Favourites, shelves & tags — “beach reads”, “to lend to Dad” — yours alone

Chapter IV · The Margins

Stars, reviews & secrets — kept apart

A rating is public arithmetic. A review is your considered opinion. A note in the margin — “signed copy, don’t lend” — is nobody’s business. Kitabi keeps all three in their proper places, each with its own lock.

  • Private by default — nothing is visible to anyone unless you flip the switch
  • Per-review visibility — share one opinion, keep ten to yourself
  • Notes stay yours forever — no toggle, no exceptions, no fine print

  • Dashboards & charts — your library, counted and drawn
  • Language-wise, year-wise, status-wise — sliced any way you shelve it

Chapter VII · The Quiet Oracle

Know what to read next

Warm suggestions drawn from the books you loved — each with an honest “why this one”, reasoned from your shelf, never from an advertiser’s. Prefer to browse in peace? One switch turns it all off.

Because you loved Khasakkinte Itihasam & One Hundred Years of Solitude

Pedro Páramo

Juan Rulfo · 1955

Why this one: the same dream-logic village of the dead that Vijayan brought to Khasak — in fact, the book García Márquez said unlocked his own. A short, haunted afternoon read.

Reads your language

മലയാളം · தமிழ் · English & beyond

Kitabi grew up on Indian bookshelves. Your മലയാളം, தமிழ் and English books live side by side — spelled right, shown proudly, never an afterthought.

When you own both, Kitabi knows they’re the same story — translations stay linked, yet each keeps its own life, its own reviews, its own place on your shelf.

Questions, answered

Frequently asked questions

What is Kitabi?

Kitabi is a personal library app for readers who own books. Catalogue your shelf by scanning barcodes, keep a lending ledger of who borrowed what, log your reading with a timer, and see your year in pages. It works offline and syncs across your devices.

Is Kitabi free?

Yes. Kitabi is free, including the lending ledger that other apps put behind a paywall. There are no ads and your library is never sold or shared.

Can I import my Goodreads library into Kitabi?

Yes. Export your library from Goodreads as a CSV and import it in one tap — shelves, ratings, reviews and reading dates arrive mapped, not dumped. Any spreadsheet CSV works too, and you can export your whole library back out at any time.

Does Kitabi work offline?

Yes. Your library lives on your phone, so browsing, adding books and logging reading all work with no internet. Changes sync quietly when you’re back online.

Which languages does Kitabi support?

Books in any language. Kitabi grew up on Malayalam, Tamil and English bookshelves — titles display correctly in their own script, search understands transliteration (typing “Kayary” finds കയർ), and translations of the same work stay linked to each other.

Is my library public?

No — Kitabi is private by default. Every visibility switch starts off. You choose what to share: a single review, your shelf, or nothing at all.

Is Kitabi available yet?

Yes — Kitabi is out now, free on both stores: the App Store for iPhone and iPad, and Google Play for Android.

Your shelf is waiting

Kitabi is out now on iPhone and Android — because your books deserve better than a spreadsheet. Free, private, and yours to keep.
